Marseille rose to the occasion again, yet PSG took the Trophée des champions after a 2-2 draw and 4-1 on penalties in Kuwait City on Thursday.
They trailed early and were repeatedly stretched, then turned the contest to lead 2-1 until Gonçalo Ramos levelled at 90+4 before the shootout. According to L'Équipe, Roberto De Zerbi again questioned his team’s volatility.
The Italian admitted he does not have all the answers and accepted primary responsibility for such swings in four days, from the 0-2 no-show against Nantes to this display. He felt this might be his best match in charge, with Nantes perhaps the worst.
De Zerbi said he even cried on entering the dressing room, urging his players to reproduce this level every time. He believed the performance had everything, from play and character to technique and defending, against a side that swept the honours in 2025.
Benjamin Pavard struck a positive note, saying there will be other chances to bring a trophy back this season and that finals experience matters. He contrasted Nantes with standing up to PSG and argued this is the identity they must retain.
It is not the first time OM have matched the elite, losing 1-2 at Real Madrid on 16 September, then defeating Ajax 4-0 on 30 September, Newcastle 2-1 on 25 November and Monaco 1-0 on 14 December. Next up is Bayeux in the Coupe de France, an R1 side.
