Sunderland defender Omar Alderete is a serious doubt for Paraguay’s World Cup meeting with Germany after a knee scare.

He suffered the injury in the 0-0 draw with Australia last week, a result that confirmed progression to the last 32 after defeat to the USA. According to Sunderland Echo, scans indicate no major damage, yet a muscle strain persists and the 29-year-old trained separately.

A late fitness test is planned and pain remains despite those results, with little time to bring him fully up to speed, so the decision will be left until the last minute.

Paraguay face Germany on Monday at 9.30pm UK time, live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Elsewhere, Wilson Isidor is the only Sunderland player to exit after the groups, signing off with a long-range strike for Haiti against Morocco. Chemsdine Talbi’s Morocco face Netherlands and Sunderland trio Brian Brobbey, Lutsharel Geertruida and Robin Roefs overnight on Monday, while Simon Adingra’s Ivory Coast take on Norway on Tuesday evening.
