The forward started in attack for Egypt alongside Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah in Tuesday’s latest World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou, but lasted less than 10 minutes of the goalless draw before limping off with a knee problem.

Marmoush sustained the injury following a tackle in the fourth minute of the game at the Stade du 4 Aout, initially trying to play on before being replaced by Osama Faisal, whose second-half goal was ruled out for offside as the Pharaohs missed the chance to confirm a place at next summer’s World Cup.

He watched the rest of the game from the bench, where he could be seen sporting strapping on his right knee.

It was later confirmed that Marmoush had suffered a knee ligament bruise and would undergo scans upon Egypt’s return to Cairo on Wednesday morning.

City will be desperately hoping not to have lost the 27-year-old ahead of Sunday’s home Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium, which is quickly followed by their Champions League opener against Kevin De Bruyne’s Napoli and a high-profile top-flight trip to Arsenal.

He has been an important player since joining from Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt in a £59million transfer in January, scoring eight goals in 28 appearances across all competitions and featuring regularly in the early stages of the new season.

City, who have suffered back-to-back defeats by Tottenham and Brighton after opening the campaign with a thumping victory at Wolves, are already dealing with plenty of injury problems, with the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol and Savinho all having been sidelined of late, while Abdukodir Khusanov sustained a knock against Brighton and John Stones pulled out of the England squad before their wins over Andorra and Serbia with a muscular complaint.

Erling Haaland needed stitches after being hit in the face by the door of Norway’s team bus in a freak accident over the weekend, but it did not stop him from scoring five times in Tuesday’s incredible 11-1 rout of Moldova in Oslo.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are sweating over the fitness of Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount ahead of the derby after both players went off injured during the 3-2 win over Burnley, with Cunha subsequently withdrawing from the Brazil squad.

Diogo Dalot later pulled out of Portugal duty with a muscle issue, while Lisandro Martinez is a long-term absentee for the Red Devils.
