His appointment was met with scepticism and doubt, as he was relatively unknown in English football.

Any fears were quickly put to bed as he won his opening game in charge, beating Blackburn Rovers 2-0, with then 32-year-old Ian Wright scoring both goals.

It marked the start of a new chapter in North London and one that spanned more than two decades, bringing three league titles and seven FA Cup triumphs.

Wenger eventually departed the Emirates at the end of the 2017/18 season, with Spanish coach Unai Emery coming in as his replacement.

The Gunners have won just one FA Cup since Wenger’s exit, under current boss Mikel Arteta in 2020.
