To anyone unfamiliar with the context, it might have seemed baffling when AC Milan started selling Olivier Giroud goalkeeper shirts back in 2023.

Within hours of announcing that fans could print the striker’s name and number on the club’s home goalkeeper kit, every size had sold out. The reason? Giroud’s unexpected heroics just 24 hours earlier.

Milan were leading newly promoted Genoa 1-0 heading into stoppage time, thanks to an 87th-minute strike from Christian Pulisic.

The visitors made their final substitution in the 93rd minute - Davide Bartesaghi replacing Luka Jović - but moments later disaster struck.

Goalkeeper Mike Maignan was shown a straight red card following a VAR review after his knee caught Genoa forward Caleb Ekuban in the face.

With no further changes allowed, Milan had no choice but to send an outfield player in goal. Giroud stepped up, and even pulled off some crucial saves.
