Over Musiala: Hoeneß takes a shot at Matthäus | OneFootball

Uli Hoeneß is holding Jamal Musiala accountable at FC Bayern—and lashing out at Lothar Matthäus. The honorary president is hoping for a comeback in top form, but clearly rejects outside criticism.

On the sidelines of a friendly match against FC Rottach-Egern, Hoeneß made his position clear. The Bayern boss made it clear what he expects from his attacking player—and which voices in the public debate he finds unacceptable. Musiala continues to work on rejoining the team following his serious injury.

It’s been just under a year since that setback. Hoeneß emphasized that the club had behaved in an exemplary manner during this long period of absence. “I think FC Bayern acted very fairly regarding the injury. After all, it’s been a year, and they’ve shown a lot of patience,” said the honorary president. But now he’s looking ahead: “He’ll still have time, but of course he has to live up to the role he had before his injury.”

Hoeneß also hinted that he’s hoping for the Musiala of old: “Of course, I hope he regains his former form,” he explained.

Hoeneß puts Matthäus in his place

In addition to his message to the 23-year-old, Hoeneß addressed the public criticism—and lashed out at Lothar Matthäus. He clearly rejected critical remarks from outside the club: “The pressure brought up by Matthäus and Co.… That doesn’t help him, and it doesn’t help us either.”

Matthäus had previously emphasized that there were “no more excuses” for Musiala. The Bayern star must now finally put this serious setback behind him. Hoeneß clearly does not view this assessment as helpful.

Musiala suffered a serious injury to his left foot during the Club World Cup last summer. Just a few weeks ago, a metal plate was removed during another surgery. The national team player currently wants to return to team training, which is why he is not participating in the team’s tour of Asia.

Sporting director Max Eberl recently emphasized that the club intends to continue bringing Musiala—who, with a reported annual salary of 25 million euros, is one of Munich’s top earners—back to full fitness gradually.
