Palace forced into Europa Conference League play-offs after surrendering lead to ten-man KuPS | OneFootball

Crystal Palace surrendered a commanding position in the Europa Conference League table as they drew 2-2 with ten-man KuPS Kuopio, a result that condemned them to a knockout-phase play-off.

Manager Oliver Glasner rotated heavily with domestic commitments in mind, naming a youthful side for Palace’s 27th match of an increasingly congested season.

The decision appeared justified early on, as Palace played with authority against opponents who needed a win to remain in contention for automatic qualification.

Christantus Uche opened the scoring inside five minutes with a superb curling finish. That goal briefly lifted Palace into the top eight and within reach of a direct place in the last-16.

Teenage winger Joel Drakes-Thomas impressed on his European debut, while George King and Dean Benamar looked assured in a back three that limited KuPS to half-chances before the interval.

Palace dominated possession in the first half and went close to extending their lead through Romain Esse.

KuPS offered little threat before the break but returned with renewed intensity after half-time and quickly altered the direction of the contest.

Piotr Parzyszek equalised early in the second half before Ibrahim Cisse completed a swift turnaround just three minutes later.

The rapid collapse left Palace struggling to regain the control they had enjoyed earlier.

Glasner responded by introducing Marc Guehi, Tyrick Mitchell and Will Hughes in an attempt to restore balance and momentum.

The contest shifted again when Clinton Antwi was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge, leaving KuPS to defend their lead with ten men.

Palace eventually capitalised as Mitchell delivered from the left and Justin Devenny rose to head home the equaliser.

The late goal sparked a frantic finish as Palace pushed for the winner required to avoid the play-offs.

Devenny and Eddie Nketiah both went close in stoppage time, but KuPS defended resolutely under sustained pressure.

The final whistle confirmed Palace’s ninth-place finish in the league phase and ensured their European campaign will extend into February.
