While it’s the first time we’ve played Palermo, we’ve faced many of the biggest Italian sides before.

Here we take a look at some of our classic encounters against Italian clubs…

Juventus

Two wins, two draws, four losses

We played out an entertaining two-legged UEFA Cup tie with Juventus in 1976, with the Old Lady emerging victorious on aggregate after both sides won one game each.

Two draws followed in the Europa League in 2010 before the Turin-based side won three Champions League ties between 2015 and 2024.

The most recent meeting came in the US this summer as we hammered five past the Italians in our final Group G fixture at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Inter

One win, one draw

Our first ever competitive meeting with Inter is perhaps the Club’s biggest night in our history.

The 2023 Champions League final saw us edge out the Nerazzurri 1-0 in Istanbul thanks to Rodri’s cushioned second-half strike.

A 0-0 draw followed at the start of the 2024/25 campaign as both clubs got to grips with the new league phase format.

Napoli

Two wins, one draw, one loss

Napoli were City’s first ever opponents in the Champions League back in 2011. We earned a 1-1 draw that night but went down 2-1 in the reverse fixture a couple of months later.

The two sides were then drawn together in the group stage again in 2017/18, with Pep Guardiola’s City coming out on top in both games.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus got the goals in a 2-1 win at the Etihad before an entertaining 4-2 victory in the south of Italy a few weeks later.

AC Milan

One win, one draw

One of the few giants of the European game we are yet to face in the modern era, our only competitive ties with AC Milan came in 1978 when we progressed through our UEFA Cup third round tie.

After a 2-2 draw in Milan, Tony Book’s side were 3-0 victors back at Maine Road.

The two clubs met last summer in a pre-season friendly in New York, but City fans will no doubt be hoping to see us matched up against the Rossoneri in a European fixture soon.

Atalanta

One win, one draw

A relatively recent addition to Italy’s upper echelon of clubs under Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta have enjoyed their golden years over the last decade.

2019/20 was their first ever campaign in the Champions League and their first ever meetings with City.

We won 5-1 at home before a 1-1 draw in Italy, played at the San Siro rather than their own Gewiss Stadium, ended with Kyle Walker famously playing the last 10 minutes in goal.

Roma

One win, one draw

Drawn together in the group stages of the 2014/15 Champions League, City and Roma played out a 1-1 draw at the Etihad before a crucial win in the Italian capital earned City an unlikely passage through to the Round of 16.

Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta were the scorers on that memorable night.
