USA international, Paxton Aaronson is set to exit Eintracht Frankfurt and return to the MLS after agreeing a deal with Colorado Rapids, according to Absolut Fussball.
The midfielder departed MLS side, Philadelphia Union in 2022 for $4 million plus add-ons (€3.4million) and made his debut for Eintracht Frankfurt in 2023 with a 2-0 defeat to Union Berlin.
Aaronson struggled for first team football in Frankfurt and although he extended his contract last year, spent time on loan at Dutch clubs Vitesse and Utrecht.
The move may come as a surprise to fans.
Aaronson played 33 games for Utrecht last season, scoring eight times and making four assists.
The American also featured in five of Frankfurt’s pre-season games, including a goal-scoring cameo in the DFB Pokal last weekend.
However, Aaronson reportedly travels to Denver today as Colorado finalise a €8 million transfer and could make his debut as early as Sunday, when the Rapids travel to LA Galaxy.
Colorado Rapids currently sit seventh in the MLS Western Conference and will be hoping that Aaronson can launch them into the Final Series.
Aaronson had been linked with other clubs in Europe, including Utrecht, where coach, Ron Jans recently confirmed negotiations:
“We are in talks with Frankfurt. We hope we can keep him for another year. It will take a few weeks before it is clear whether it will work.”
However, Colorado seem to have won the transfer battle.
Aaronson will be hoping that the move secures his international spot for the FIFA World Cup 2026, hosted in USA.
Aaronson has made a handful of appearances for USA, but spent time on the bench in recent victories over Guatemala and Costa Rica in the Gold Cup.
Back at his soon-to-be former club, Eintracht Frankfurt, they begin their Bundesliga season this weekend away to Hoffenheim.
