Pep Guardiola believes Lamine Yamal still has room to grow physically after a season interrupted by injury problems, although the former Barcelona coach has no doubts about the youngster’s extraordinary ability to thrive under pressure.
The legendary Barça manager reflected on the winger’s development as Spain prepare for a crucial World Cup meeting with Portugal, offering an assessment that mixed caution with admiration.
Back in April, Lamine Yamal suffered a hamstring injury that prematurely ended his club season and briefly cast doubt over his participation at the FIFA World Cup.
Spain eventually chose a conservative approach, carefully managing his workload during the group stage.
The Barcelona winger featured for only 20 minutes against Cape Verde in the opening game, was withdrawn at half-time against Saudi Arabia, and then completed 76 minutes in the final group-stage encounter against Uruguay.

Even in Spain’s Round of 32 victory over Austria, where he once again proved decisive, the coaching staff opted to replace him in the closing stages.
Discussing the player’s current condition, Guardiola admitted there is still work to be done from a physical perspective.
He was quoted as saying by FCB World, “Lamine is a bit behind physically due to his injuries.
“However, given his age, he has an incredible ability to handle pressure and can turn a match around on his own.”

Despite concerns over his physical condition, Guardiola remains convinced that Yamal possesses the mentality required to perform on football’s biggest stages.
Few players of his age have shown such composure in high-pressure environments, and his performances throughout the tournament have reinforced the idea that he is capable of influencing games even when not fully fit.
As such, Guardiola offered his thoughts on Spain’s tactical setup ahead of the Round of 16 clash with Portugal, pointing towards the importance of midfield control.
“If Rodri can set the tempo in midfield alongside Pedri, these two players, together with Lamine Yamal, have everything it takes to make the difference,” he explained.
