Wednesday advanced to the second round of the EFL Cup with a win over Bolton Wanderers.

Phil Brown has urged Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri to take action to unlock the club's potential, following their penalty shootout win over Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Cup.

While Steven Schumacher didn't field his strongest XI on Wednesday evening, it certainly can't be claimed that Henrik Pedersen did either.

A number of Owls players who have never made first-team appearances before lined up away from home to face a Bolton side that have looked strong in the opening weeks of the campaign.

The only recognisable first-team players in the Danish boss' starting XI were goalscorer Ike Ugbo, 20-year-old Pierce Charles, 21-year-old Charlie McNeill and 24-year-old Olaf Kobacki.

And yet, despite the odds very much being in the home side's favour, they needed a last-minute goal from Amario Cozier-Duberry to take the game to penalties, but Wednesday held them off in the shootout to advance to the second round of the cup, where they will face Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.

It was a glorious and proud moment for a club and a group of supporters that have had to deal with so much negativity in recent months.

Former Bolton defender and Hull City boss Phil Brown applauded the players and the travelling fans for their efforts in the hard-fought contest, and, in doing so, sent a clear message to Wednesday's owner about what he should do with the club.

"Wednesday were a young side and they knew they had to perform above and beyond the call of duty, having never been in this environment before," Brown stated, via the BBC. "And they did it in front of a decent crowd.

"And as for the Sheffield Wednesday fans. Well, the owner [Chansiri], come on. Have a look at what you have got here. It is a proper football club and now you are going to play Leeds United with the chance to go even further in this cup.

"Come on, just pay the bill."

Sheffield Wednesday could be transformed by the right owner

The Thai national told first-team boss Henrik Pedersen that he is doing all he can to fix the current situation at the club. Alan Nixon recently reported that the players have also been told that a takeover is on its way, in order to prevent even more players from leaving the club this summer.

The price of any buyout remains to be seen, though, as Chansiri reportedly wants £100 million for his depreciating asset. Former Crystal Palace owner John Textor is interested in a potential Hillsborough takeover.

Someone with real ambition, and the means to be able to back up that ambition, could certainly unlock the best version of Wednesday, one that hasn't been seen in a long time. The loyalty that both players and supporters have shown in dark times is something that any owner of any sports team would love to have.

The tough task may be getting Chansiri to climb down from his valuation to something a bit more realistic. If that happens, there is real scope for a new owner to come in and do great things at Hillsborough.
