Manchester City’s return to familiar ground in the Carabao Cup was anything but straightforward. A trip to West Yorkshire brought reminders that even against League One opposition, rhythm and composure are required. Huddersfield battled with determination, but it was Phil Foden who imposed himself on proceedings, guiding City into the fourth round.
The England international has endured spells where his influence dimmed, yet here he looked close to his irrepressible best. Foden struck in the 18th minute, finishing low into the corner after linking up neatly with teenage debutant Divine Mukasa. It was the sort of instinctive strike that spoke of sharpness and confidence.
Later, his creativity unlocked Huddersfield again. Foden assisted Savinho also. That contribution effectively ended the contest, underlining how central the midfielder remains to Pep Guardiola’s system.
Huddersfield were not merely passive participants. Zepiqueno Redmond lashed over when well-placed, while Ben Wiles dragged wide with City briefly stretched. The best chance came late on as Cameron Ashia’s curling effort struck the post, leaving goalkeeper James Trafford relieved on his return to the side.
These moments offered encouragement to the home support, yet also emphasised the fine margins. Against a side of City’s stature, wastefulness carried a heavy cost.
Guardiola’s approach at Arsenal last weekend drew questions, but here his side reasserted their identity. City monopolised 76% possession, registering 68 touches in the opposition area. The numbers reflected dominance, though the scoreline did not.
Opportunities came and went—Nico O’Reilly saw a chipped effort clawed away, Savinho dragged wide before converting, and Mukasa’s strike was gathered by Lee Nicholls. For all the control, City had to rely on Foden’s quality to tilt the tie.
Beyond the result, Guardiola used the occasion to usher in new faces. Reigan and Jaden Heskey, sons of former England striker Emile, were handed debuts. Forgotten midfielder Kalvin Phillips returned after a long absence, offering a rare reminder of his presence in this squad.
City will now travel to Championship side Swansea in the next round, where sterner examinations surely await. Yet the night belonged to Foden—a player who, in West Yorkshire, looked once more like the heartbeat of Man City.
