The first half was controlled by the home side, who had plenty of chances to take the lead. Bolton keeper Jack Bonham had to produce multiple strong saves to prevent Argyle from taking the lead.

However, the key moment came just two minutes before halftime when Wanderers attacker John McAtee was shown a straight red card for elbowing Alex Mitchell in the face.

Two minutes after play resumed in the second half, the 10 men of Bolton took the lead from the spot via Johnny Kenny after Mathias Ross was deemed to have cleared the ball using his arm.

The Pilgrims struck back 10 minutes later though. Herbie Kane's excellent pass freed Ronan Curtis inside the box, who turned and tucked his shot into the bottom right corner from 10 yards out.

Wanderers regained the lead 20 minutes from the end when Mason Burstow chased a lost cause down the right and his cross was bundled into his own net by Malachi Boateng, which would prove to be the deciding goal.

The first big chance of the contest fell to the visitors. A quick counter saw Thierry Gale dash to the byline before cutting the ball back across goal. His cross fell awkwardly at the feet of Mitchell, who almost turned it into his own net, with Hazard on hand to prevent what would've been a calamitous own goal.

Just before the 15-minute mark, Argyle should've had the lead. A delightful cross field pass from Kane set Curtis one-on-one with Bonham. The Wanderers stopper reacted quickly to charge down the winger's effort, keeping the contest level.

Five minutes later, a neat free-kick routine fell to Plymouth skipper Joe Edwards inside the Bolton box. He struck an effort with plenty of conviction through the legs of George Johnston, but Bonham managed to hold the shot and prevent it creeping in at the near post.

The Pilgrims had the ball in the net just after 20 minutes thanks to a neat one-two between Malachi Boateng and Owen Oseni on the right flank, with the latter stroking home. However, the Irishman was adjudged to have strayed offside when he made his run.

Another nervy moment came for Bolton eight minutes later when Max Conway's clearance was charged down by Curtis. The rebound fell to Oseni, who had the goal at his mercy, until Bonham brilliantly recovered to block the striker's shot.

On the stroke of halftime, the visitors were reduced to 10 men. McAtee landed an elbow right in the face of Mitchell from a long ball forward, which saw Charles Breakspear send the Wanderers forward for an early bath.

Steven Schumacher's side were lucky not to finish the opening 45 minutes with nine men. Ruben Rodrigues went straight through Mathias Ross right in front of the Devonport End, somehow only earning him a yellow card.

The deadlock remained unbroken as the first half drew to a conclusion, but Argyle headed in at the break with their tails up, as they held the numerical advantage heading into the second period.

Not even two minutes after play resumed in the second half, Breakspear pointed to the spot. Argyle defender Ross was judged to have put the ball out for a corner with his arm.

Celtic loanee Kenny stepped up and sent Conor Hazard the wrong way, giving the 10-men of Bolton the lead, in what was a seriously frustrating decision to go against the Pilgrims.

It only took Argyle 10 minutes to get themselves back on level terms. Kane found Curtis inside the box with a defence-splitting ball, and the latter dusted off the move by turning and firing an accomplished finish into the bottom right corner of Bonham's net.

Moments after Curtis almost curled in a second for Plymouth, Bolton regained the lead with 20 to play. A long ball forward was chased down the right wing by substitute Burstow, whose cross was bundled into his own net by Boateng.

With seven minutes to go, the returning Lorent Tolaj missed two golden chances to get his side level. First, he pounced on a poor backwards header from Chris Forino, but the defender managed to recover and block his shot.

From the resulting throw in, Wes Harding's deep cross fell kindly to the number nine inside the box. He managed to touch it down before uncharacteristically scuffing his shot just wide of Bonham's near post.

A late Plymouth onslaught couldn't breach the Bolton backline, which stood resolute throughout the contest. The Trotters took the three points back up north with them, in what was a huge boost to their play-off hopes.

It was a hugely disappointing result for Tom Cleverley's side, who'd been undone by two lapses in concentration. However, the Pilgrims still have six matches to try and sneak their way into the top six.
