Sunderland are preparing for a landmark 2026/27 after sealing European football, and a supercomputer has mapped out their likely league finish.

According to Betting Lounge, the projection places Sunderland 16th on 40 points, above Nottingham Forest in 17th on 36.

Regis Le Bris and his players surpassed expectations last season with a seventh-place finish in their first Premier League campaign in nine years. A final-day win against Chelsea, coupled with results elsewhere, secured Europa League football alongside Bayer Leverkusen, Olympique Marseille, AC Milan and Juventus.

The model has Arsenal top with 86 points, Manchester City second on 78 and Liverpool third with 75. Manchester United are fourth on 68, with Chelsea fifth on 66.

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are both on 63, in sixth and seventh respectively, with Newcastle United eighth on 57. At the bottom, Hull City, Ipswich Town and Coventry City are predicted to go down with 33, 27 and 24 points.

Sunderland will also look to build on their momentum in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, while aiming to match last season’s league achievements. A hectic summer transfer window lies in wait as the Black Cats strengthen for a congested campaign.
