Sunderland enter the summer window with a 2025/26 net spend that ranked sixth in the Premier League at £135m loss.

Sunderland Echo notes that last summer’s overhaul followed the play-off final win against Sheffield United, after which Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson departed. That Wembley success triggered a permanent deal for Enzo Le Fee, a club-record fee later eclipsed by Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra.

Further signings saw Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete and Dutch trio Robin Roefs, Lutsharel Geertruida and Brian Brobbey arrive before the window closed. January added goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, winger Nilson Angulo and Ivorian prospect Jocelin Ta Bi.

The rebuild delivered seventh place and a Europa League berth. Across the division, Arsenal recorded a £243m loss, followed by Liverpool at £227m, Manchester City at £168m, Tottenham Hotspur at £158m and Manchester United at £149m, with Sunderland next on £135m. At the other end, Bournemouth posted a £112m profit, Wolverhampton Wanderers £70m, Brighton and Hove Albion £55m and Brentford £44m.

This summer is not expected to be as frenetic as last year, yet Sunderland are set to strengthen. The club will hope to mirror last season’s success as business begins on Monday.
