Sunderland’s robust edge has underpinned an impressive Premier League return. They are 11th after a 2-1 comeback at Newcastle before the international break, with seven games left, an outside chance of Europe and no real relegation trouble.
According to Sunderland Echo, Regis Le Bris has based this season on solid defending, with 36 conceded in 31 matches, only four sides have shipped more. Discipline-wise, only five teams have more cards than Sunderland, whose 67 total comprises 65 yellows and two reds.
They rank sixth for yellow cards with 65, and ninth for reds with two. By contrast, Chelsea have seven dismissals this season, with Bournemouth next on five.
Trai Hume leads Sunderland’s bookings on eight, followed by Noah Sadiki and Reinildo Mandava on seven, and Omar Alderete on six, the only quartet above five. Hume’s eight is the third-highest in the top flight, while Brighton’s Lewis Dunk leads on 10, the only player in double figures so far.
Reinildo was the first Sunderland player sent off in the league, dismissed after 33 minutes of the 1-1 home draw with Aston Villa in September. Luke O’Nien was then shown red six minutes after coming on, late in the 3-0 defeat at Manchester City in December.
Enzo Le Fee, Alderete and Reinildo have committed the most fouls among Sunderland players with 26 each, just ahead of Dan Ballard and Hume on 25.
