In what was the first women’s match to be played at the Parc des Princes this season, Lyon extended their lead in the table over their rivals with a convincing 2-0 win during which the hosts had few opportunities to get back into the game.
Although there was little at stake in the grander scheme of things, given the title is ultimately decided through an end-of-season play-off, clashes between the two powerhouses of women’s football have remained a strong indicator of the dynamics of the league. With Les Fenottes unbeaten against the Parisians since 2022, there was hope on the hosts’ part that the sense of occasion and a record-breaking crowd could play in their favour.
Joe Montemurro’s team wasted no time in stamping their authority on the game, though. Haitian striker Melchie Dumornay would convert from close range after seven minutes, making the most of a poor clearance from Sakina Karchaoui. Lyon then doubled their lead on the half-hour mark, with Dumornay this time squaring it for Kadidiatou Diani to finish past a helpless Mary Earps, after a ball over the top from Lindsey Horan.
Despite a stronger start to the second half, the hosts were ultimately unable to create any clear-cut opportunities to threaten Lyon’s two-goal lead. With their second defeat of the league campaign, PSG have founded themselves knocked down to third place behind cross-town rivals Paris FC, who thrashed Guingamp 6-0 earlier in the day. The evening’s visitors, meanwhile, scarcely broke a sweat in extending their lead at the top to seven points — although it could all be for nothing if they fail to replicate that form in the play-offs in the spring.
