A BOLA has listed 12 notorious football brawls, notably recalling a Mourinho incident, with Benfica back in focus after Sunday’s clássico.

One entry is the 2011 Spanish Super Cup final between Barcelona and Real Madrid, which descended into chaos after a heavy Marcelo tackle sparked a melee involving players and staff. Mourinho was at the centre, touching the eye of Pep Guardiola’s assistant, Tito Villanova.

Another case is Portugal against the Netherlands in the 2006 World Cup last 16, dubbed the Battle of Nuremberg. Russian referee Valentin Ivanov showed four red cards and 16 yellows, a tournament record.

On Sunday, the Benfica versus Porto clássico saw José Mourinho dismissed along with Lucho González after a mass confrontation following Leandro Barreiro’s goal.

Benfica visit Arouca on Saturday 14 March at 20:30 in Liga Portugal Betclic’s matchday 26. Vasco Seabra’s side host the encounter.
