During his time in the Premier League with Arsenal and on loan at other clubs, Ainsley Maitland-Niles gained a reputation for being a utility player. Originally a central midfielder, throughout his career, the England international has found his position chopped and changed frequently, struggling to find a permanent home for himself. Whilst this may be to the detriment of some players, that is not the case for the versatile Englishman.
Versatility is no doubt one of the best qualities of Maitland-Niles’ game. The former Southampton defender has the ability to play in a number of positions at a high standard. This has continued since he made his surprise move to Lyon. Paulo Fonseca has utilised him in varying positions from attacking midfield to winger, and regardless of where he has played under the former Lille manager, he has become a player that can be trusted time and time again.
Despite his versatility being an attractive option for any coach, Maitland-Niles has been able to hold down a specific position at Les Gones. With Saël Kumbedi departing the club and Clinton Mata transitioning to become a centre back, the 28-year-old has made the right-back berth his own. Given his ability to balance the defensive and attacking responsibilities of the role, the Arsenal academy graduate has become one of Fonseca’s most dependable figures in the Lyon dressing room.
Whilst the right-back has found a position where he feels at home, his versatility plays a key factor in the OL head coach’s tendency to change tactics and adapt to the opposition. There may be times when Fonseca opts to play with varying formations and defensive combinations. Whether it’s a three at the back or a defensive unit of four, Maitland-Niles is able to transition seamlessly to his manager’s demands.
The England international is most relied upon defensively, but has also shown his ability to influence in attack. Last season, he contributed five goal contributions and already has three to his name this season. Although he may not grab the headlines and will have gone under the radar to fans of the Premier League since he left England, the right-back continues to be a consistent and reliable performer for Lyon and an ever-present once again, as evidenced by his 21 appearances in all competitions, including starts in four of OL’s six Europa League games.
