PSG are beatable says Spurs stalwart Davies

Paris St Germain are European Champions but have proved to be far from invincible after defeats by four English clubs in the past nine months, the most recent of which was a thrashing when Chelsea beat the French side 3-0 in the Club World Cup final this summer.

PSG became champions of Europe last May after thrashing Inter Milan 4-0 to win the Champions League, but also lost to Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool en route to the final. They also lost 1-0 to Botafogo in the group stages of the Club World Cup and to Chelsea in the final.

They face Europa League winners Spurs in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday night in Udine, and Ben Davies, captain of Wales and Tottenham’s longest-serving player, says PSG can be beaten.

“It’s quite clear we’re playing against one of the best teams in world football,” said Davies.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but as we saw over the summer, they are not unbeatable, not invincible.

“We have to take confidence from that and put our best foot forward.”

Heung-Min Son announced he was leaving Tottenham after over a decade at the club during their summer tour of South Korea. Davies and Son are close friends and the Welshman says that he was a big presence in the Tottenham dressing room.

“Over the summer we lost Sonny, who was a big part of the dressing room, a big player on the pitch and we’re going to miss him.”

The Korean was also captain of the club and Davies says that the rest of the team will need to replace his leadership: “Ultimately, the senior guys have to be there to support everyone and make sure we allow everyone to stand up and show the player and person they are.”

Tottenham won their first trophy in 17 years when Son lifted the Europa League trophy in Bilbao last May and now Davies believes Spurs can win more.

“Once you get that initial feeling, you get the desire and hunger within the group that we want to do it again.

“We had our time enjoying the result last season. Now, everyone’s focus is on the number of competitions we are in and trophies we can win, and that starts tomorrow night.”
