Manchester United need to improve their goalkeeping department considering how last season went for Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
The Cameroonian was culpable for major mistakes in the Premier League and Europa League, while his replacement fared little better when called upon.
Now that the United No.1 is injured, it is even more important for the club to address this issue. Senne Lammens seems to be the preferred option going by recent reports.
But whether he can challenge Onana remains to be seen. Ideally, Amorim would have preferred a more ready-made option, which explains the Red Devils’ interest in Emiliano Martinez.
But Aston Villa’s asking price has meant a deal remains unlikely as of now. However, a fancied name is back on United’s radar following a recent update.
CaughtOffside has claimed that Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain has decided not to sign a new deal owing to his disappointment with the proposal.
The Champions League winner’s contract runs out in 2026 and PSG do not want to lose him on a free, and as a result, they have decided to sell him this summer.
And the 20-time English league champions are prepared to pounce. INEOS could grab his signature on the cheap.
“Manchester United are preparing for a major change in the goalkeeping department, and Gianluigi Donnarumma is on their radar.
“Sources close to the situation have informed CaughtOffside that Gianluigi Donnarumma is one of the top names on Manchester United’s shortlist.
“PSG have been negotiating with him for over a year on a new contract. Donnarumma earns €7 million net salary plus €3 million in bonuses, but the club’s offer didn’t satisfy him.
“He has decided not to renew his deal, and with only one year left on his contract, PSG have decided to sell him this summer.”
His current market value stands at €40 million. Whether the co-owners can afford such an outlay remains to be seen. When quoted a similar price by Villa for Martinez, United opted to stay away.
Onana’s sale seems closely linked to any new goalkeeping arrival. But with him injured, an exit might not materialise. A huge conundrum awaits INEOS, who also need to bring in a striker and midfielder this window.
