Chakhtior Donetsk have secured a berth in the 2026-27 Champions League league phase after winning Ukraine, with the PSG v Arsenal final and a 2024 regulation unlocking their route.
According to L'Équipe, Sunday’s 16th league title confirmed their qualification, taking them alongside 17 clubs already through. The Ukrainian champions are not normally guaranteed a direct place, but this season’s final has favoured Arda Turan’s side.
With both finalists already assured of Champions League entry via their leagues, PSG set to finish at worst second and Arsenal likewise, the titleholders’ spot is left vacant and reallocated to a champion from outside England, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Türkiye and the Czech Republic.
Until 2024, that berth went to the champion of the highest-ranked association without an automatic place. For the past three seasons it has instead been awarded to the champion club with the best UEFA coefficient, regardless of association ranking.
Olympiakos, on 62.250, and Glasgow Rangers, on 59.250, held stronger coefficients than Chakhtior’s 56.250, but slipped in their domestic races, clearing the path for the Ukrainians.
AEK Athens, on 24.000, did not pose a threat. The same applied to Celtic Glasgow, on 44.000, and Hearts, on 11.500, who are contesting the Scottish title.
