Queens Park Rangers should ensure that Liam Morrison is tied down to a new contract to fend off interest.
After a shaky start to the season and some early question marks over manager Julien Stephan, things have begun to turn around for Queens Park Rangers, and one man that they should endeavour to ensure remains at the club already is Liam Morrison.
QPR started the campaign with enterprising performances undone by the occasional lack of quality or judgement before then being annihilated 7-1 by Coventry City last month.
Since that hammering at the hands of the Sky Blues, though, the R’s have regrouped and have now enjoyed three successive victories in the Championship as they ease their way back up the early season league table.
The amount of talent that has been assembled in the final third is eye-catching and their young squad is being nurtured by a manager in Stephan who has forged his reputation due to his development of young players.
The attack is one thing, but the defence is what has required improvement and signs of cohesion and solidity are also there, with Morrison at the heart of it – and he is someone who QPR should focus on tying to a new contract.
Having spent a season on loan at Wigan Athletic in League One and impressed, Morrison earned himself a move to Loftus Road from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024.
After a fairly underwhelming stint last season, many supporters may want QPR to be a little more patient before rushing to offering him a new deal – but that may be naïve.
The start of this season has seen Morrison play 90 minutes in all six of QPR’s Championship matches this season, being one of players to keep their place after the 7-1 loss to Coventry.
Those three matches since that defeat have seen QPR enjoy three successive victories and concede just two goals, keeping their first clean sheet of the season in a 1-0 defeat of high-flying Stoke City at the weekend in which Morrison was immense.
According to FotMob, the Scot has made 1.3 interceptions per game so far this season, with only Jonathan Varane in midfield having made more on average for the club thus far. That defensive nous combined with his excellent ability on the ball, whereby he has an 86.7% passing accuracy, is making him standout this season.
It was a slow start to his career in west London and there were question marks over his quality but that is beginning to shine through with Stephan, and his mentality should be praised as a young defender to come back from that humiliating team defeat earlier this season.
When he joined QPR, Morrison signed a two-year contract, which means he is into the final year of his deal at Loftus Road – and that something the club most act upon.
Having played youth football for both Rangers and then Celtic, Morrison moved to German giants Bayern Munich at the age of 16 and went on to play for Bayern Munich II.
That move showed a couple of things, with the first being the way in which Morrison is and was viewed by high level scouting teams such as Bayern, and would indicate that someone that highly-rated is someone who is likely to go on to have an excellent career – and so this early season form isn’t necessarily anomalous but also perhaps the start of his potential being fulfilled.
It would also suggest that the 22-year-old isn’t afraid to step outside of his comfort zone, with a move abroad at such a young age an indication of remarkable maturity.
With players able to sign a pre-contract with clubs outside of England from six months before the expiry of his deal, it also wouldn’t therefore be a surprise to see many suitors in for him in January.
