If a recent report from The Daily Record is believed to be true, Rangers are closing in on Tochi Chukwuani, having agreed a €4.5m (plus add-ons) deal with Sturm Graz for the young midfield ace. He is now waiting for permission to travel to Scotland to complete the formalities before being revealed as the new Ibrox signing.

The 22-year-old Denmark youth international progressed through the academy ranks of B1973 Herlev, B.93 and Nordsjælland before making his senior debut for the Tigers in 2019. He was supposed to join the Serie A side Hellas Verona in 2022. However, a minor heart defect led to a failed transfer due to strict rules in Italy regarding heart problems.

After training with Lyngby for several weeks, Chukwuani penned a two-year contract with the newly-promoted Danish outfit. His impressive stint in the centre of the pitch earned him a move to Sturm Graz in the summer of 2024, and the Glasgow giants, being convinced by his expertise and all-round traits, are now keen on having him in their ranks.

Chukwuani, a former teammate of the Gers pair, Mohamed Diomande and Oliver Antman, during their Nordsjælland days, must be keen for a fresh challenge after helping Die Schwoazn conquer the 2024-25 Austrian Bundesliga title. Antman and Diomande should help him settle in the new surroundings, as the youngster, despite playing his part in Sturm Graz’s 2-1 Europa League victory over Rangers, must be fascinated by the prospect of winning the Premiership crown.

Why Rangers Should Bring Him In

Rangers had a nightmare first couple of months under Russell Martin, both in terms of summer business and league results. A squad overhaul did not work in their favour, particularly in midfield, with Joe Rothwell and Lyall Cameron struggling for minutes behind the likes of Nicolas Raskin, Diomande and Connor Barron.

Rothwell is expected to return south of the border amid interest from the Championship clubs, and the club are open to letting Cameron leave on loan, as the new boss, Danny Rohl, does not view him in his first-team plans.

Bailey Rice, currently out injured, has been on Aston Villa and Sunderland’s radar for quite some time, and the Light Blues could lose the teenage graduate in June upon the expiry of his Ibrox contract.

Kieran Dowell, deployed a few times as a makeshift right-winger early into the season, would be offloaded sooner or later, and the Danish prospect, regarded for his physicality, athleticism, pressing ability, and skill in ball progression, would not only restore parity but also enhance their quality in the middle of the park.
