Rasmus Hojlund left Manchester United this summer to return to Italy on a temporary move. The Danish striker had joined the Premier League giants from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth a reported €75 million.
Hojlund enjoyed a decent debut campaign at the Theatre of Dreams, but things went haywire last season. The 22 year old struggled to find the back of the net, finishing the campaign with just four goals in 34 Premier League appearances.
Desperate to address their goalscoring woes, the Red Devils secured the signature of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer.
Hojlund was subsequently informed that he was surplus to requirements at the Theatre of Dreams. Napoli swooped in, securing the Dane’s signature on a season-long loan with a £38 million obligation to buy him next summer.
Hojlund has hit the ground running on his return to the Serie A, already scoring four goals in six appearances across competitions.
Sesko, on the other hand, is still finding his feet at Old Trafford and has registered just two goals in 10 appearances in all competitions since his move.
The Dane, meanwhile, has taken to Antonio Conte’s tactics like a fish to water, although he has missed the last three games with a muscle injury.
Nevertheless, the Partenopei are pleased with Hojlund’s efforts and now appear to have made a crucial decision regarding his future.
According to The Mirror, Napoli have contacted United to discuss the possibility of making Hojlund’s stay permanent in the winter transfer window. The report adds that the Premier League giants have already given the green signal to the move.
“Manchester United have given Napoli the green light to sign Rasmus Hojlund on a permanent deal in January. Napoli signed the United flop on a season-long loan in the summer.”
“But the Italian champions have been so impressed with the striker, they are keen to take up the option and are in talks with United to bring forward the £38m deal.
“And with United keen to off-load the Danish forward as soon as possible, the English giants will look to conclude negotiations with Napoli in the coming weeks.”
Hojlund is reportedly happy at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and has no desire to return to the Theatre of Dreams. Despite his recent good form, the Dane no longer features in Ruben Amorim’s plans, and United have already moved on from the player.
Funds raised from Hojlund’s permanent departure will help the English giants in their plans to strengthen the squad in 2026, with a new midfielder already high on Amorim’s agenda.
