Cherif Fofana is quickly becoming one of the most highly-rated young talents coming through the ranks at Real Madrid.
In fact, according to AS, the 16-year-old defensive midfielder has emerged as one of the biggest surprises of Real Madrid’s pre-season, catching Jose Mourinho’s attention during the opening days of training.
With many senior players still away following the World Cup, Mourinho has called up 16 academy players to work with the first team, and few have made a stronger impression than the young midfielder.
Those who know Fofana best refer to him as “little Kante” because of his relentless energy, defensive instincts and tireless work rate.
Standing at 1.79 metres, the teenager is not the tallest midfielder, but he plays with remarkable intensity and maturity, making him one of the academy prospects generating the most excitement.

After developing at hometown club Alcala, he spent just one season at Mexico FC before Real Madrid came calling in the summer of 2025. And it did not take long for people inside the academy to realise they had signed a special talent.
Following his first appearances with the Juvenil C side, coaches were already predicting he would not stay there for long. By October, only six league matches into the season, he had earned promotion to Juvenil B through his performances.
From there, his progression accelerated even further.
He established himself as a regular starter, impressed enough to earn another promotion to Juvenil A, featured in the Copa del Rey Juvenil squad, and started the Premier League International Cup match at Old Trafford, playing the full 120 minutes.
Just days later, he reached another milestone by making his Castilla debut, coming off the bench against Cacereno in the closing stages of the season.

Now, ahead of the new campaign, the question is no longer whether he is ready to move up. It is simply how quickly.
Cherif is a right-footed holding midfielder whose greatest strength is winning the ball back.
He excels at reading danger, covering space and breaking up opposition attacks, while also possessing the composure and technical ability expected of a modern midfielder.
He combines aggressive defending with intelligent positioning, strong tackling and clean distribution, leading to the comparisons with N’Golo Kante.
Fofana, despite being only 16, plays with confidence and determination beyond his years. That mentality has stood out during his first sessions with Mourinho.
Despite being one of the youngest players involved, he has shown no signs of being intimidated by training alongside established professionals under one of football’s most demanding managers.
Inside Real Madrid, there is growing belief that Fofana is a player worth watching closely.
