This Sunday, in front of Real Madrid's socios, Florentino Perez acknowledged a monumental error.
This morning, Real Madrid experienced an excruciatingly awkward moment. It happened during a tribute video to deceased personalities, when an Elche player appeared in place of Andre Silva, who died alongside his brother Diogo Jota this summer in a car accident.
But a major blunder marred the initiative. The video included a tribute to Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash on July 3, as well as his brother André Silva. However, the image shown on screen next to Jota was not of his brother, but of André da Silva, a player for Elche—the very club Real Madrid is facing tonight.
This mix-up was quickly recognized as a serious misstep, likely to upset those involved. Aware of the gravity of the blunder, Real Madrid responded swiftly. Through an official statement and then by email, the club issued an apology to Elche CF and their player André da Silva: "Real Madrid CF apologizes to Elche CF and their player André da Silva for mistakenly including his photo in the club's tribute video, instead of that of André Silva, brother of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player. We regret this incident."
Florentino Pérez himself then took the stage to address the club members, publicly expressing his regret for this unfortunate mix-up.
