According to SPORT, Real Madrid are beginning to face what could be a “sweet headache” regarding their goalkeeping position in the long run.
With Thibaut Courtois under contract until 2027 and widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in history, the question of who will succeed him is slowly becoming more pressing.
For years, Courtois has been instrumental in Real Madrid’s success, producing world-class saves and helping the team secure multiple titles.
As time goes on, however, the club must plan for the future and identify who will take over the role when the Belgian eventually departs or retires.
Currently, Real Madrid have two options. Andriy Lunin serves as the immediate solution, but at 26 years old, the Ukrainian goalkeeper has yet to make his debut under Xabi Alonso this season.

However, he has proven in the past that he cannot be overlooked. At the same time, though, the Ukrainian feels that he cannot wait for his moment at Real Madrid forever.
Meanwhile, a new name is emerging for the long-term future: Fran González. Just 20 years old, Gonzalez has impressed with his performances at the U20 World Cup and is currently playing for Castilla.
Real Madrid are confident in his development, and his progress is starting to spark discussions about the next era of goalkeeping at the club.
The situation remains a luxury problem that Real Madrid have not faced in years. Lunin is ready to step in when needed, and Gonzalez could eventually follow in Courtois’ footsteps, ensuring continuity at one of football’s most demanding positions.
Planning ahead is crucial for the club, and with both goalkeepers showing potential in different ways, Real Madrid are preparing to manage the future of their goalkeeping legacy carefully.
Courtois’ heir will likely emerge in stages, first with Lunin and later with Fran González, securing stability between the posts for years to come.
