Real Madrid continued their 100% record at the start of the new season with a 2-0 victory over Espanyol on Saturday afternoon, in a match that saw Dani Carvajal make his return to the line-up. The club captain started on the bench during the midweek victory against Marseille, but after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hamstring injury, he is poised for an extended run of starts.

As per Marca, Carvajal reflected on the victory over Espanyol, as well as the positive start made to the new season.

“We are happy with the victory, the team played a complete game. We suffered a little in defence, we knew that Espanyol were a good team, but we were organised and intense and we are still at the top of the table. It can’t be done better, finding every day the way the coach wants us to play, taking the concepts. We are at an idyllic beginning.”

Saturday’s match was the first since Carvajal was sent off for a headbutt on goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli during Real Madrid’s victory over Marseille earlier in the week, and the veteran defender took the opportunity to apologise for that moment.

“I want to apologise for what happened the other day, the expulsion in the Champions League. It was something unbecoming of a game like this and of me, and that will not be repeated. The team made a great effort and got the victory over the line.”

Carvajal will be crucial for Real Madrid in the coming months

Trent was signed in the summer with a view to being Real Madrid’s starting right-back for years to come, but now that he is out for the next six weeks with a hamstring tear, Carvajal will be the man counted upon at right-back. However, there will be a problem there when Los Blancos return to Champions League action, given that he will be suspended.
