Real Madrid are likely to seek a new head coach this summer, with Alvaro Arbeloa’s future uncertain after an inconsistent spell in charge. Mauricio Pochettino is among the candidates under consideration.

MD reports that Madrid would face competition from Tottenham Hotspur for Pochettino, whose United States national team deal runs out after this summer’s World Cup. The Argentine previously managed Spurs from 2014 to 2019.

Tottenham are searching for a permanent appointment, with Igor Tudor not expected to continue beyond his interim stint. Pochettino is their preferred option, and the club believe the emotional pull could give them the edge.

Arbeloa, 43, was promoted from Castilla after Xabi Alonso left in January and has the players on his side, yet senior figures hold reservations. If he is not retained, Madrid are thought to favour an experienced campaigner. Jurgen Klopp is regarded as the dream choice, although he has doubts about returning to management now.

Madrid know their next appointment is pivotal. Alonso looked a safe bet last summer but failed to win over the squad, which brought his tenure to an end. Arbeloa has fared better with player support, but tactical doubts have contributed to defeats against Albacete, Osasuna and Getafe.

It remains unclear which route Madrid will take.
