As David Alaba celebrates his 33rd birthday today, it could be dawning on the Real Madrid veteran that he is very well in the final phase of his career.
The Austrian international suffered a brutal ACL injury in December 2023 with the damage to the cartilage in his left knee meaning the defender will be unable to reach his best level again.
To complicate matters, months after his return to action, Alaba sustained meniscus damage in May and had to undergo another surgery.
Now, according to AS, Real Madrid have no plans to offer David Alaba a new contract, with his current one expiring in 2026.
The Merengues are planning to offer renewals to Alaba’s fellow veterans Thibaut Courtois and Antonio Rudiger, with the former’s new deal expected to be finalised next month.

However, Alaba will not receive the same treatment as the Spanish heavyweights are looking to offload his massive wages even as concerns grow over his fitness.
Alaba is on a hefty salary of €19.5 million per season and given his current situation, it is understandable why Real Madrid are not keen on offering him an extension.
After all, following the arrival of Dean Huijsen and the emergence of Raul Asencio, Alaba is essentially the fifth-choice centre-back at Real Madrid.
Moreover, following his latest injury setback, there is still no clear return date for the defender even though he has travelled to the USA for the FIFA Club World Cup.
What remains to be seen is whether Real Madrid plan on offloading the former Bayern Munich star this summer or allow him to continue at the club until the expiry of his contract in 2026.
