Real Madrid have remained frustrated at referees from the get-go this season, and understandably so, given the number of decisions that have gone against them in recent weeks.

The latest event that stirred the offices in the Spanish capital came during the team’s clash against Real Sociedad at the weekend when Dean Huijsen was sent off for a foul that led to the hosts being denied an ‘obvious goalscoring opportunity’ according to the referee.

As per Los Blancos, however, Huijsen was not the last man and Eder Militao was just metres away from him at that point in time, making a red card an exaggerated punishment.

Status of the appeal

As relayed over the weekend, Real Madrid are looking to appeal Huijsen’s suspension and get his red card cancelled for wrongful refereeing. After all, there is a clear error on the part of the referee.

Mundo Deportivo, however, brings to light that the chance of the player’s suspension being revoked is very remote and that all signs point to Real Madrid’s failing with their attempt.

Article 27 regarding refereeing reports clearly states that signed reports from the referee stand as accepted evidence and will justify the referee’s stance.

Appeals are accepted if video footage clearly proves a major error that contradicts the referee’s report, something that is very rare.

If Real Madrid’s appeal is accepted in this case, Huijsen will be left free without even a yellow card since the committee cannot downgrade a red to a yellow card.

Since the minimum sanction allowed is one game, the defender is almost certainly ruled out of the team’s clash against Espanyol.

The Merengues can still take the case further, first to the Appeals Committee and then to the Spanish sports court (TAD). The likelihood of a positive response, however, is low.
