Arsenal Women continued their WSL campaign with another commanding win last time out. The girls came from a goal down to win comfortably for the second week running, beating West Ham by a four-goal margin in the process. Frida Maanum, Stina Blackstenius, Caitlin Foord and Alessia Russo were all on the scoresheet, with the latter scoring a late double. West Ham opened the scoring via a Daphne van Domselaar own goal, a blunder by the Dutch international. Her error did not prove costly however as the Gunners came roaring back, especially in the second period, as the game ended in a 5-1 win for the visitors.

Slegers delighted with Arsenal’s resilience

Speaking after the game via Arsenal, Slegers praised the team’s character for coming back to win for the second week in a row. She revealed the comeback was a pleasing factor in the dominant win.

“Yeah, that was a big part of tonight, of course, because it happened in the opening game at home and then today again,” she said. “So that’s of course not the scenario we want and plan for harsh conditions, the ball flies into the net, but it’s early in the game and we come back and we have all the time to come back.

“It was a hard game today. It’s a very physical opponent, very disciplined. They make it really, really hard and they have some quality up top. So I think intensity was high and it was a hard game for us to play. So again we had to be calm, composed, wear down, be confident that things can happen early or late. And I think what I’m really happy with today again is the team performance.”

Arsenal hit top spot

Before the game, Slegers admitted West Ham were going to pose a serious threat, but besides the own goal, it was smooth sailing for the Gunners. The Hammers could not even muster a single shot on target as Arsenal imposed themselves. The win took Arsenal Women to the WSL summit, at least momentarily given the majority are yet to play. Given their high goal difference (+7), they could likely finish the game week on the summit and even though it is too early in the campaign, it will provide a confidence boost nonetheless.

Arsenal Women are scheduled to take on Manchester United in round three, with the fixture slated for Sunday, September 21st.
