Referees Committee believe Real Madrid red card decision was wrong

Real Madrid may have won at Real Sociedad on Saturday, but there were a lot of anger from club officials at Dean Huijsen’s red card. The defender was dismissed for a last man challenge on Mikel Oyarzabal, but Los Blancos have argued that Eder Militao was on the cover, meaning that a yellow should have been the decision from referee Jesus Gil Manzano.

Real Madrid are expected to contact FIFA as part of their complaints over the standard of refereeing in Spanish football, of which there has been several in the last 12 months. And it appears that this latest one does have some merit in the eyes of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA).

As per Diario AS, the feeling inside the CTA is that Gil Manzano was wrong to show a red card to Huijsen, as they feel that Militao was around on the cover. However, they also recognise that it was a “complex move with several nuances that will be studied and debated”, which they intend to go next week.

CTA agree with VAR decision on Huijsen incident

Despite stating that it should not have been a red card for Huijsen, the report has revealed that the CTA agreed with the decision of VAR official Jorge Figueroa Vazquez not to intervene, as they believe it was not a clear and obvious error that Gil Manzano made on-field.

It remains to be seen whether Real Madrid launch an appeal, but given these reports and their anger, it would be no surprise. As things stand, Huijsen will not be available for next weekend’s match against Espanyol, but if his red card is overturned by the Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee, he would be allowed to remain in Xabi Alonso’s starting line-up for the Santiago Bernabeu clash.
