Trai Hume looks set to reprise an unorthodox right wing role ahead of Nordi Mukiele, with Enzo Le Fee pushing to support Brian Brobbey. Sunderland XI: Roefs, Hume, Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Reinildo, Xhaka, Sadiki, Le Fee, Mundle, Brobbey. Subs: Patterson, Cirkin, Neil, O’Nien, Mayenda, Adingra, Isidor, Rigg, Geertruida.

Marc Guehi misses out as he closes in on a move to Manchester City. Jean-Phillipe Mateta starts despite growing talk of a January switch to Juventus.

Goalkeeper Blondy Nna Noukeu has left Sunderland permanently. The 24-year-old, who joined after leaving Stoke City and did not make a senior appearance, has signed for Ligue 2 side US Boulogne CO, where he is expected to play regularly.

His exit is the club’s fourth of the window, after Jay Matete joined MK Dons permanently, Joe Anderson moved to Barrow and Timothee Pembele joined Ligue 1 side Le Havre on loan. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said Noukeu had progressed well and been a core part of the senior group, adding that the move should give him games and that the club wish him well.
