Sunderland’s final league position could translate into a substantial merit payment by season’s end.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Premier League have not released 2025/26 figures and last season’s payments offer the clearest guide.
Holding 10th would be worth about £29.1m in merit payments alone. That would cover Nordi Mukiele at £12m, Robin Roefs at £11.5m and Bertrand Traore at £2.5m, with roughly £3.1m left.
There is scope to climb. The average uplift is £2.66m per place, and Sunderland are five points adrift of Liverpool in fourth, an extra £15.9m. A win this weekend could take them to fifth if results align, adding £13.3m.
They have 30 points from 21 games, 16 clear of the relegation zone, in their first top-flight campaign since 2017. Summer business was lavish, with Granit Xhaka, Roefs, Nordi Mukiele and Noah Sadiki arriving, offset by the sales of Jobe Bellingham and Tom Watson.
Ending a five-match winless run, four draws and a 3-0 defeat at Brentford, now looks crucial. Crystal Palace visit the Stadium of Light on Saturday, their first home game since New Year’s Day. West Ham away then Burnley at home follow, both currently in the bottom three.
