Régis Le Bris has underlined Trai Hume’s importance to Sunderland’s Premier League campaign, praising the defender’s consistency and versatility in a season when many promotion stalwarts have struggled for regular minutes.
According to Sunderland Echo, Le Bris highlighted Hume’s capacity to cover multiple roles, and noted that Robin Roefs’ hamstring injury has left him leading the squad for minutes across all competitions this season.
In the league, Hume has logged 2,584 minutes, the most in the team, ahead of Roefs and centre-back Omar Alderete, with Enzo Le Fée and Noah Sadiki completing the top five.
Hume also filled an unorthodox right-wing role earlier this season while Bertrand Traoré was at AFCON and then injured. With Chris Rigg in strong recent form there, Le Bris views that option as situationally useful and reflective of Hume’s wider contribution.
Le Bris’s reasoning is tactical, especially away to strong opponents, where Hume on the right can help the side drop into a 5-4-1 and move between wide, inside and the 10 pocket or link play in midfield. He has also been used on both sides of the defence.
Internationally, Hume captained Northern Ireland in last week’s 2-0 defeat in Italy, ending their World Cup hopes. Northern Ireland face Wales on Tuesday night, after which Hume will return to Wearside later this week for the Premier League run-in.
