Sunderland are preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window after a successful first season back in the Premier League. Régis Le Bris believes they are well set thanks to Florent Ghisolfi’s work behind the scenes.
According to Sunderland Echo, Ghisolfi arrived last summer, led a major recruitment drive for the top flight, then overhauled the department and installed a new scouting team assessing targets for this window and beyond. The scouts meet every two or three months, with another session held last week.
Le Bris remains focused on the run-in but will soon add his thoughts in recruitment meetings. He thinks the club can execute their strategy with an improved workflow, while stressing the market remains unpredictable.
European qualification is still possible, albeit less likely after back-to-back defeats, and would probably demand a larger squad. Le Bris said it has not been a specific focus, though he is not worried and says they would adjust numbers if required, noting last summer started late but ended positively.
He has previously insisted he does not want to break up the squad even if elite interest emerges, yet says the club will be ready to respond. Ghisolfi has also spoken of prioritising stability, while saying they will try to improve the team, aiming to build a sustainable club that does not need to sell due to Premier League revenues, although sales may still happen at times to reflect player cycles and provide pathways for young talent.
