The history between Chivas and Cruz Azul in direct elimination stages has delivered many memorable moments for the Nación Rojiblanca, with standout performances, celebrations, and epic comebacks that have become part of Club Guadalajara’s history.
On the horizon is a new Liguilla showdown between El Rebaño and La Máquina, who will face each other in the Semifinals of the Clausura 2026. Below, we revisit some of the most important victories for Guadalajara, who aim to crown their great semester by securing the club’s 13th title.
Grand Final – 1986-87 Season / Aggregate: Chivas 4-3 Cruz Azul
Despite the capital side taking the first leg 2-1 at the Estadio Azteca, the team led by Alberto Guerra delivered an unforgettable performance in the decisive match, played in a packed Estadio Jalisco. With goals from Fernando Quirarte and a brace from ‘Yayo’ de la Torre, they won 3-0 to secure the ninth championship in Chivas’ history.
Repechage – Clausura 2003 / Chivas 5-5 Cruz Azul
This series is one of the most dramatic in the history of short-tournament Liguillas. Guadalajara pulled off a true feat: after losing 4-1 in the first leg at Estadio Azul and going down early in the second leg due to a Francisco Palencia goal, the fighting spirit of El Chiverío came alive. They staged a remarkable comeback with goals from Joel Sánchez, Omar Bravo, Johnnie García, and Jair García to advance to the next round. Ultimately, their better position in the league table earned Chivas a place in the Quarterfinals.
Quarterfinals – Apertura 2006 / Aggregate: Chivas 4-2 Cruz Azul
The road toward Chivas’ 11th star began here. After eliminating Veracruz in the Repechage, El Rebaño faced Cruz Azul in the Quarterfinals. The team coached by ‘Chepo’ de la Torre won 2-0 in the first leg at the Coloso de la Calzada Independencia, with goals from Omar Bravo and ‘Bofo’ Bautista, setting up a calm return leg in the Capital Rojiblanca. There, the ‘Eterno Capital’ Ramón Morales scored a brace to seal the tie and crush the capital side’s hopes, who despite a 2-2 draw in the match, fell on aggregate.
