Gianluigi Donnarumma is settling in well at Manchester City but reports from England claim the Italian goalkeeper was  first offered to the Citizens’ fierce local rivals Manchester United.

According to what has been reported by the Daily Mirror, via TuttoMercatoWeb, Donnarumma was offered to United after PSG informed him he was no longer part of their plans.

The Ligue 1 side opted instead to sign Frenchman Lucas Chevalier from Lille, with the belief that he is more in-keeping with head coach Luis Enrique’s tactics than Donnarumma was.

Man Utd move for Donnarumma collapsed due to wage demands

The reports claim that the Italian was offered to United for a fee of around €40 million, roughly €10 million more than what City ended up paying for him.

However, the Italian wanted €20 million per season across five years at United, which would have made him the club’s highest-paid player.

In the end, the Red Devils opted not to upset the balance of their wage structure, especially after a summer in which the club offloaded high-wage strugglers like Antony, Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho.
