Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush has been ruled out of the upcoming Manchester derby following a knee injury sustained during Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso. The injury, described as a bruised knee ligament, occurred early in the match and has raised concerns about Marmoush’s availability for future fixtures.
Marmoush started in attack for Egypt alongside Mohamed Salah in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou. However, less than 10 minutes into the goalless draw, he limped off the field with a knee problem. The injury followed a tackle in the fourth minute of the game. Initially attempting to play on, Marmoush was eventually substituted in the ninth minute. He watched the remainder of the match from the bench, sporting strapping on his right knee.
Egypt’s team doctor Mohamed Abu El-Ela confirmed that Marmoush had suffered a bruised knee ligament. An X-ray is scheduled upon the team’s return to Cairo to assess the full extent of the injury. Despite the setback, Egypt maintained a five-point lead in Group A with two matches remaining in the qualifiers. EgyptToday
Following the injury, Manchester City issued a statement confirming Marmoush’s unavailability for the upcoming Manchester derby. The club stated:
“Manchester City FC can confirm that Omar Marmoush has sustained a knee injury whilst on international duty with Egypt. The City striker suffered the injury in the early stages of Egypt’s World Cup qualifying match with Burkina Faso on Tuesday evening. Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation. Everyone at City wishes Omar a speedy recovery.” Manchester City FC
This injury adds to City’s growing list of sidelined players, including Rayan Cherki, Kalvin Phillips, Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, Abdukodir Khusanov, John Stones, Phil Foden, and Savinho. Many of these players are either nursing long-term injuries or racing against time to recover. The Sun
Marmoush’s absence is a significant blow for Manchester City ahead of the highly anticipated derby against Manchester United on Sunday. The 26-year-old forward has been an important player since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt in January, scoring eight goals in 28 appearances across all competitions. His versatility and attacking prowess had made him a key figure in City’s early-season lineup.
With Marmoush sidelined, City will need to adjust their attacking options for the derby. Manager Pep Guardiola will have to consider alternative strategies to compensate for the loss of the Egyptian international.
As Marmoush returns to Manchester for further assessment and rehabilitation, both he and Manchester City will be hoping for a swift recovery. The club’s medical team will monitor his progress closely to determine the appropriate course of action.
In the meantime, City will focus on preparing for the upcoming fixtures, including the Manchester derby and their Champions League opener against Napoli. The team will aim to overcome the challenges posed by the current injury crisis and continue their pursuit of success in domestic and European competitions.
