Filip Kostic inaugurated the Luciano Spalletti era with an immediate goal against Cremonese, scoring for the first time in the season and giving Juventus an early lead. He drew back-to-back starts after the ousting of Igor Tudor amid some absences and rotation.
According to Corriere dello Sport (via Tuttomercatoweb), the Serb will have a chance to change his future in the coming months. He stayed put in Turin following a loan spell to Fenerbahce, mostly because the team didn’t receive a worthy offer. Their previous coach liked his traits and favored keeping him as Andrea Cambiaso’s deputy.
Kostic is in the final year of his Juventus contract and is widely expected to leave on a free. On the other hand, if he captured a somewhat regular role, the management could be open to a short-term extension. Atalanta and Roma inquired about him last summer, but the winger didn’t push to leave.
The 33-year-old is in no rush to choose his next team and is set to wait for the call on a renewal till next spring. According to Nicolò Schira (via Napoli Network), Spalletti contemplated signing the veteran when he was at Eintracht Frankfurt during his time in Campania, but the Azzurri ultimately stood pat at the position that summer, confirming Matteo Politano after the departure of several mainstays. Plus, the Bundesliga side asked for €20M.
There are worse backups, and he should have probably played more while Tudor was cycling through the alternatives on the right wing, neither of which was too convincing, and never thought of moving Cambiaso there. He’s not superb, but at least you know what you get with him, and he doesn’t screw the pooch.
