Liverpool have been at the centre of some of the world’s biggest transfer dealings in recent years.

The Reds broke the British transfer record twice last summer, bringing in Florian Wirtz for £116.5 million before signing Alexander Isak for an eye-watering £125 million.

Last summer didn’t just see blockbuster arrivals though. Several key players departed Anfield, including Trent Alexander-Arnold who left for around £10 million and Luis Diaz who joined Bayern Munich in a deal worth approximately £66 million.

Most of the business Richard Hughes has done since joining the club has been exciting, and will hopefully benefit the Reds long-term, but there is one big mistake that is now more obvious than ever.

Richard Hughes’ transfer blunder is clear

The decision to sell Diaz to Bayern Munich was not a straightforward one.

Rumours had been rife for some time that the Colombian wasn’t happy with his contract at Liverpool and wanted a move away to secure a better deal.

When the German champions came knocking with a reasonable offer, it would have been extremely hard for Liverpool to turn them down, especially considering the outlay at Anfield in that window.

This weekend Bayern were crowned Bundesliga champions once again, and Diaz has been an integral part of their domestic success this season.

The decision to let the Colombian go has looked foolish for a lot of the campaign, and his performance for Bayern this weekend once again proved that Hughes made the wrong choice last summer.

The 29-year-old provided two assists after being substituted on at half time to ensure that his side secured the three points they needed to be crowned league champions.

Following the weekend, Diaz now boasts an impressive 24 goals and 20 assists in 43 matches for Bayern this campaign, and the Colombian has been one of the best players in Europe.

The move to Germany has solidified Diaz’s status as one of the best in the world in his position, and his attacking output has been sorely missed by the Reds this season.

Diaz produced 25 goal involvements and was a crucial part of Arne Slot’s title winning side, and it is now clear that the best decision last summer would have been to reject Bayern’s bid and offer the forward a new contract with favourable terms at Anfield.

The Anfield faithful will no doubt be happy to see Diaz’s success, and will wish him all the bets for the rest of his career, but it is hard seeing a former player doing so well away from Liverpool as the Reds have disappointed massively on the pitch in recent months.
