Arsenal supporters were left anxious after Martin Odegaard was forced off in the opening stages of the clash against Leeds with a right shoulder injury. The Gunners’ captain landed awkwardly following direct contact with the ground, with his arm positioned close to his side. Such an incident is commonly associated with an acromioclavicular (AC) joint sprain, though there is also a slight chance of a collarbone issue.
While early indications suggest the latter is less likely, the exact nature of Odegaard’s shoulder setback will only be confirmed after medical assessment. For Mikel Arteta and his staff, the hope will be that the diagnosis points towards a minor sprain rather than something more complicated.
Should Odegaard’s scans confirm a low-grade AC joint sprain, Arsenal may find themselves in a more fortunate position than first feared. Typically, such injuries heal within two weeks, with pain management often dictating how swiftly a player can return to full training and competitive action. In many cases, the absence lasts only a week or so.
If, however, the damage is more severe — categorised as a grade 2 or 3 sprain — the Norwegian playmaker could be sidelined for two to four weeks. Though that would still represent a relatively short spell out, it would nonetheless be an unwelcome disruption to Arsenal’s midfield rhythm during a demanding phase of the season.
Odegaard’s influence on Arsenal cannot be understated. Beyond his technical qualities and creativity in possession, he sets the tone with pressing intensity and leadership. Any absence, however brief, would require Arteta to rethink his midfield balance, particularly in games where control and invention are essential.
Options do exist within the squad to adjust, yet none replicate the specific qualities Odegaard provides. That is why the club and its medical team will approach the situation with caution, weighing the need for a swift return against the importance of ensuring complete recovery.
Arsenal are expected to issue an update once further tests are concluded. Until then, speculation over the severity of Odegaard’s shoulder problem will continue. For now, the most realistic scenarios range from a one-week absence to a month on the sidelines.
The timing is far from ideal, but the fact that an extended layoff appears unlikely will offer some reassurance. Ultimately, the extent of the injury and his pain tolerance will decide how quickly he can resume his role at the heart of Arsenal’s midfield.
