Rob Edwards has not held back on his criticism of the Wolves squad after their 3-0 defeat at Brighton

Wolverhampton Wanderers, with relegation to the Championship already confirmed, have nothing to play for now except pride, but not even that has been enough to fire up the Old Gold squad, who are going down with a whimper.

It's been a torrid season at Molineux for Wolves, who have had virtually nothing to cheer about.

Their latest 3-0 loss away to Brighton and Hove Albion was their 24th of the league campaign, and with two games remaining, supporters will be hoping to get those games over and done with as soon as possible.

Goals from Jack Hinshelwood and Lewis Dunk within the first five minutes set the tone for the day for Wolves, as Yankuba Minteh rounded out a comfortable win for the Seagulls late on, who were by far and away the better side.

It looks set to be a huge summer ahead in the Black Country as Wolves prepare for a big rebuild job spearheaded by former Luton Town and Middlesbrough head coach Rob Edwards, who has not held back on what the club must do over the coming months when it comes to reshaping the squad.

Usually a calm and jovial figure, Edwards is feeling the full force of Wolves' current predicament, and following their defeat on the South Coast on Saturday, the Welshman has made his feelings perfectly clear regarding some members of the squad.

It's no secret that there will be a lot of turnover at Molineux over the summer, with a lot of their supposed 'star' assets looking to move on, having no intention of dropping into the Championship, something Edwards is, and has long been prepared for.

Following the loss to Brighton, when Edwards was asked whether he had given up on some players, he responded: "Yes, definitely. Some of them have got to go.

"We’re bottom of the league, it’s been embarrassing. They've got to go. Have I not been clear with that? We know there's going to be a lot of change.

"At the moment, yes, it's difficult. You’re coming to a team that is already light-years ahead of you anyway, so you know it's going to be a difficult day.

"We have a start like we did. We knew we were going to have to be at our max to get anything from it.

"We've got to keep our heads down for another couple of games and then the change can begin.

"We've got two more games. So, suck it up, keep our head down, take whatever we're going to have to take for the next couple of weeks and then we can really get to work.

It's clear that almost everyone at Wolves can't wait for the season to be over, from players to coaches to fans, and if you gave each of them the option to not play the remaining two games against Fulham and Burnley, their answers would be pretty predictable on the whole.

Work on identifying potential targets this summer will have almost certainly already begun for Edwards, who looks like he will have the opportunity to lead the club into their first Championship season since 2018.

Plans for the upcoming transfer window will be well underway as Wolves prepare for their return to the Championship

The dawn of a new era is on the horizon for Wolves, and it is imperative that they make the correct decisions at the very top to ensure they are as best prepared to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, otherwise danger will ensue.

We have seen both Luton (under Edwards) unable to get to grips with the Championship and suffer back-to-back relegations, as have Leicester City most recently, as the second tier must be taken seriously.

Wolves have previously suffered back-to-back relegations in 2012 and 2013, and must ensure they don't replicate that feat next year.

With Joao Gomes being heavily linked with Atletico Madrid, and Andre linked with Leeds United, the exodus at Molineux will begin imminently when the transfer window opens, as Edwards must be prepared for what is a seismic summer in the Black Country.
