The former Foxes centre-back has pulled no punches when assessing the club's fortunes

Leicester City have endured a disastrous 12-month period, as they became the second club in as many seasons to suffer back-to-back relegations from the Premier League down to League One.

The Foxes' recent plight has been well-documented, as they spent their 10th-year anniversary season after winning the Premier League against all odds under Claudio Ranieri with a backdrop of supporter disillusionment, which only heightened after their relegation to the third tier for just the second ever time was confirmed in April.

Leicester had gone through three managers in the space of one year following their title-winning return to the top-flight from the Championship back in 2023/24, with Steve Cooper and Ruud Van Nistelrooy's respective tenures at the King Power Stadium lasting a matter of months each after Enzo Maresca initially left for Chelsea two summers ago.

The same pattern followed this season too, although there was still an initial degree of enthusiasm which met the initial decision to replace Van Nistelrooy with former Queens Park Rangers boss, Marti Cifuentes, on a three-year contract last summer.

However, the Spaniard was duly dismissed in January after a home defeat by Oxford United, with the City hierarchy then moving to appoint former U's boss and Leicester defender, Gary Rowett, on a short-term contract.

Yet, with the experienced figure only able to win two of his 14 games in charge, the Foxes were relegated alongside his former club and Sheffield Wednesday, whilst also receiving a six-point deduction in February after breaching the EFL's PSR regulations.

And, although pre-season for 2026/27 is just a matter of weeks away, no replacement for Rowett has officially been named yet, leaving one of the club's Premier League winning heroes, Robert Huth, to continue sharing rather concerned verdicts on the club's situation.

Back in March, the German centre-back, who cost a reported £3m from Stoke City before forming a colossal defensive partnership with Wes Morgan, wasn't afraid to issue an honest assessment of the Foxes' downfall amid their relegation fight, which came to no avail.

And, it's fair to say that those feelings have only heightened, like those of supporters, as the club prepares for life in League One next season, whilst managerial uncertainty is still rife despite heavy links to former Southampton and Rangers boss, Russell Martin, in particular.

Huth is also well-known for his days at Chelsea, who he was 'representing' in a Masters Football tournament at Wembley's OVO Arena earlier in the week, but when asked to give his latest verdict on matters at Leicester, he told talkSPORT's Ian Abrahams: "An even bigger mess (than Chelsea).

"It's been a shocking couple of years for Leicester. I don't think there's anything else to say apart from that.

"League One next year. It's horrendous. It's horrible," the 41-year-old stated.

"Certainly, from a former player's point of view as well, having been a part of the club's history. To see it fall off so dramatically was unexpected.

"I can't say I saw it coming. They had a good squad with a decent manager when Enzo Maresca was there.

"But, every change they've made has seemed to make the club worse and worse. Whoever came in, the performances have dropped off.

When asked if it could get any worse for the Foxes, Huth added: "I thought that at Christmas.

"I thought with Gary Rowett coming in, it's the 'hope that keeps you alive'.

"I don't know. I can't say whether they have or haven't (bottomed out). They need new players, a new manager and so many new things in League One.

"I think 11 players have been released and they need to be replaced. Do you go with youngsters? Do you want experience? There's so many questions which need to be answered.

"I want to see who is in charge next year, then you can get going with recruitment.

Huth concluded: "At the moment, if I was a player, to go to Leicester without a manager, I wouldn't go unless I knew who that is."

Leicester City need answers to Robert Huth's questions ASAP ahead of League One

As Huth alluded to, Leicester supporters will also want answers to the multitude of question marks currently associated with the club ahead of such a pivotal season.

It has been claimed that the hierarchy are preparing a lucrative offer for Martin, who has previously been linked with the role, but he has also continued to divide opinion after mixed spells at St Mary's and Ibrox.

Meanwhile, reports of an initial £10m budget have surfaced.

However, while such figures could excite many managers or head coaches, as well as supporters, that things can be put right, those at the top of the club certainly have a lot of rebuilding of their own to consider when it comes to trust, while recruitment also remains unknown right now due to the ongoing managerial search.
