Stephan El Shaarawy made his debut as captain in his first match under Gian Piero Gasperini.
The Italian-Egyptian rightfully held the captain’s armband due to his appearances, but was then overtaken by Bryan Cristante.
The number 92 has seen increasingly limited playing time, and so far he’s totaled just 591 minutes in 18 appearances in all competitions.
The 1992-born player is advancing in age, and Gasperini’s coaching project won’t be developed around him. He’s surplus to requirements, and Roma needs the outgoings to make way for the incomings.
Around Trigoria, according to Il Corriere dello Sport, there’s talk of terminating his contract, which expires in June.
This move would allow the player to reach an agreement with interested clubs, including Daniele De Rossi’s Genoa, without requiring compensation to the club.
Meanwhile, it would be useful for Roma to free themselves of the player’s salary.
