Sunderland could face competition from Roma for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi this summer, with interest potentially reviving if Evan Ndicka departs.
The Black Cats were strongly linked last year, and an offer was reported to have been rejected as Bologna failed to find a replacement, before they turned to Omar Alderete.
"I've always said we'd prefer to keep everyone, even though we know that in reality, certain offers can be tough, especially if the Premier League comes knocking. It's obvious that such a large-scale management, built to be competitive, cannot help but be financed by some sales," he told Il Resto del Carlino.
"Jhon has already spent three years with us, which is a long time in today's football. He had the ambition to leave, but unfortunately, the timeframe for the offer didn't materialise. However, we don't decide the transfer window: the conditions aren't right for him to be replaced right now, so Jhon will stay with us."
Recent reports suggest Bologna are seeking a replacement for Lucumi, increasing the prospect of a summer deal. Sunderland are believed to want defensive reinforcements, though it is unclear if he will be targeted again.
Reports in Italy indicate Roma have the Colombia international back on their list amid Premier League interest in Ndicka, with a fee of around £35m said to be required. If the Ivorian departs, Roma could move for Lucumi, and Sunderland are described as the only obstacle.
