Sunderland could face competition from Roma if they revive interest in Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi this summer.

The Black Cats were strongly linked last year, with a reported bid rejected when Bologna could not find a replacement. They then switched focus to what became a successful move for Omar Alderete.

"I've always said we'd prefer to keep everyone, even though we know that in reality, certain offers can be tough, especially if the Premier League comes knocking. However, we don't decide the transfer window: the conditions aren't right for him to be replaced right now, so Jhon will stay with us." He was speaking to Il Resto del Carlino earlier this year.

Bologna are now said to be seeking a replacement for Lucumi, raising the prospect of a summer deal. Sunderland want to bolster their defence, although it is unknown if Lucumi will be a target again.

Roma are said to have tracked him last summer and could return amid speculation over Evan Ndicka. The Ivory Coast international is attracting Premier League suitors and a fee of around £35m is being sought, which could prompt an offer for Lucumi. Sunderland are viewed as the only obstacle in Roma's pursuit, and their interest in the Colombia international has been reiterated.
