When you make a high-profile, £40 million switch between two massive Premier League rivals, every single touch, pass, and mistake is inevitably put under a microscope. Alejandro Garnacho is learning that the hard way right now.
Against his former club Manchester United, the Argentine winger struggled to make any impact and his performance received heavy scrutiny.
The 21-year-old has come under severe criticism and reports in the media suggested that Chelsea could be looking to offload him.
However, manager Liam Rosenior has denied those rumours and confirmed that the youngster firmly remains in his plans.
Speaking to reporters during his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s crucial midweek Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion, Rosenior didn’t hesitate to aggressively bat away the speculation.
When pushed on the idea that the club was already looking to cut their losses on a player who only arrived at Stamford Bridge last September, the manager firmly denied media reports.
He said, as reported by Fabrizio Romano:
“I’d like to know the source of the report…”.
“Garna is 21. Garna is someone who has special qualities when he is in a good place and he’s in good form. And my job is to help him reach those levels.”
Rosenior challenged the media room, making it crystal clear that an exit isn’t currently a topic of discussion at Cobham.
Garnacho has undoubtedly found life difficult in West London. Since Rosenior permanently took the managerial reins from Enzo Maresca, the explosive winger has found consistent starting minutes hard to come by.
The raw talent is obviously still there, we’ve all seen what he can do when he’s firing on all cylinders but his decision-making and confidence have looked totally shot in recent weeks.
The Saturday showdown against United was supposed to be a revenge game for him, instead, it only highlighted his current tactical disconnect within Chelsea’s attacking system.
For now, the message from the manager is clear, he is focused entirely on coaching, not selling.
Pulling the plug on a 21-year-old investment of this magnitude after less than a full season would be a massive admission of failure from the club’s recruitment team.
Garnacho clearly needs an arm around the shoulder, a run of games, and a massive confidence boost to rediscover his form.
